Meet the 2018 judges who will join us to select the Vendy Cup champion
Kelly Choi (@kellychoi) is an Emmy-winning food & lifestyle journalist and producer. She created a popular local restaurant show called "Food & Drink with Kelly Choi" and also hosts a documentary-style program on the many, little-known stories about this great city on a show called "Secrets of New York." Kelly is the former host of Top Chef Masters, has eaten delectable dishes cooked by the world's most-talented chefs, but few things make her as happy as when she's eating a pastrami burger at a great local diner.
Marion Nestle (@marionnestle) is Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, emerita. She is also Visiting Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell. She is the author of six prize-winning books, among them Food Politics, What to Eat, and Soda Politics. Her forthcoming book, Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat, will be published in October. She blogs almost daily at www.foodpolitics.com.
Jessica Ramos (@jessicaramos) is a community organizer, activist and currently a candidate for the NY State Senate. She has spent her life fighting for working families, advocating for labor, and organizing her local community. She has served as the Democratic District Leader in the 39th Assembly District and most recently was the Director of Latino Media for the City of New York, connecting Spanish speaking residents to government services and initiatives. Jessica does not have a driver’s license and rides the subway every day. She resides in Jackson Heights with her husband and two sons.
Michael Samuelian is the President and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island, a non-profit organization charged with the planning, redevelopment, and ongoing operations of 150 acres of Governors Island. His career as an architect has included projects spanning the Hudson Yards development to the rebuilding of downtown Manhattan after 9/11 as the Director of Lower Manhattan Special Projects at the NYC Dept of City Planning. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cooper Union and his Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University. Michael is also currently an Assistant Professor at Cooper Union.
Bill Telepan (@billtelepan) is the Executive Chef of Oceana. His extensive career includes work in some of the world’s top kitchens including Le Cirque, Le Bernardin, and Gotham Bar and Grill. Chef Telepan is one of New York’s leaders in sourcing quality ingredients from small farms and local purveyors. Telepan shares his environmental commitment on a national scale by serving as the Executive Chef of Wellness in the Schools (WITS), a non-profit group dedicated to improving children’s health by enriching lunch and recess programs at public schools. Telepan graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and lives in Manhattan with his wife and daughter.
